Visibility distance depends on the size of the changeable letters.

Copy boards with 4" or 6" letters can be used in slower speed zones. A wide thoroughfare with 35mph to 50mph speeds may require the sign to carry 8", 10" or even larger letters. A divided highway with high speed traffic will require a copy board to carry letters from 12" to 24" and sizes even larger.

We mention visibility distance in letter size and readability. But time is also a factor as well. The messages on a changeable copy sign have to be fine tuned for its viewing audience. A sign viewed by pedestrians can list a wealth of information since viewers can stop to read it.
